Abdulnasser Gharem- 2010 - Dubai

ABDULNASSER GHAREM: RESTORED BEHAVIOUR

XVA GALLERY, DUBAI, UAE – 16 January 2010 – 10 March

XVA Gallery is proud to announce the first major solo show by acclaimed Saudi artist, Abdulnasser Gharem. Restored Behavior will showcase recent ‘stamp’ paintings, installations and photographs from a series of site specific performances made in and around his home in southern Saudi Arabia.

Gharem is unique for a number of reasons, not least the way he combines his life as a conceptual artist with a career in the Saudi Arabian Army. Gharem sees his studio as the street (or wherever in the landscape he locates an artistic opportunity). Critically, he is someone who understands the value of contingency. It’s something he positions at the heart of his practice. Gharem is canny, clever and daring; an individual who is switched on politically and socially. The work in this exhibition is rooted absolutely in its (and his) geographic and social context. Gharem moves among people remixing social situations in order to question them, playfully.

Throughout the work in this exhibition, Gharem questions our relationship and trust in the structures and materials that surround us. In Restored Behaviour, Gharem is concerned with our understanding of, and relationship to, concrete, the material and the premis that we trust in ideas and structures that are presented as absolute. Concrete in this context denotes safety and immovability. The yellow lines and signifiers in these works are identical in colour and proportion to those you find edging the roads that spiderweb Saudi Arabia.

In his use of rubber‐stamps in these works, Gharem is addressing bureaucracy and the authority of its accoutrements. As an artist whose work deals in intervention there is an analogy here between the idea of delivering a judgment on your environment as an artist, and the approval or disapproval implied by Gharem’s use of stamps. Gharem believes that “Life is a kind of stamped contract since you're born. You have religion, it's a contract, you have a wife it's a contract, between the countries there is a contract for trading….” Ultimately Gharem asks us about the choices we make in life; whether we, as individuals, as cultures, as societies are following the straight path, or whether we trust in a path at all.

Biography:

Born 1973, Khamis Mushait where he lives and works today, Gharem is both a practicing conceptual artist and a Major in the Saudi Arabian Army. In 1992 Gharem graduated from the King Abdulaziz Academy before attending The Leader Institute in Riyadh. In 2003 he studied at the Al‐Miftaha Arts Village in Abha where the artists shared a similar vision and in 2004 they staged a group exhibition, Shattah, which was a significant step in the recent history of contemporary art in Saudi Arabia.

The Yellow Brick Road - Harrods

As we approached Harrods, during this freezing cold, we found an unusual amount of people standing outside and taking pictures with some huge ruby red slippers!! What's going on? Then the Wizard of Oz music and the Wizard of Oz window displays (beautiful designer green dresses, jewelry, and pointy hats of course), confirmed our guess. And, we're off to see the wizard..

This winter theme of Harrods was most creative at the shoes section. A yellow brick road went through the section and on display on the road lay exclusive personalized designer ruby red slippers in collaboration with Swarovski (to add a little sparkle). Dorothy must be proud.

Voted most creative by Oasis ;)

Ooooh, it looks like they love the shoes too :)

The 25th Alexandria Biennale - Dec, 17, 2009 - Jan. 31, 2010

Khaled Takreti's "La Dentelle" (bio below)

"The Alexandria Biennial for Mediterranean Countries is one of the leading art events in the world. In the beginning, it was visioned to make each of its editions travel in a different Mediterranean country until it was finally settled to always organize it in the city of Alexandria for its historical heritage as the old capital of Egypt in ancient times.

The first edition of Alexandria Biennial was inaugurated in the 26th of July, 1955 by the name of 'The First Biennial for the Arts of Mediterranean Countries' and it was held in the Alexandria Museum of Fine Arts where the Biennial is still based till nowadays. The aim of the Alexandria Biennial is to fortify the cultural and artistic dialog not only between Egypt and its neighboring Mediterranean countries but to extend it all over the world as well. This year, the Alexandria Biennial celebrates its 25th edition that aims to be a panoramic view of the latest in artistic creativity coming from our region."

Khaled TAKRETI Biography (b.1964)

"Syrian artist, Khaled Takreti was born in Beirut in 1964. He studied architecture and painting and finally graduated in 1992. Takreti worked as an architect in the General Directorate of Antiquity and Museums in Syria. Ever since a child, Takreti drew and painted using oil colors. He developed his skills in several art schools. In 1995, he moved to New York for two years through which he got acquainted with contemporary art. However, he chose to live in Paris as a full time artist since 2006.

Takreti's style is close to realism. Speaking of his art Takreti says, “I do not find direct inspiration for my paintings in material objects, things which I have seen, nor existing works. My inspiration comes from my own inner world.” His main subject and concern is the woman. According to him, a female's presence brings stability as well as strength, tranquility and balance, while the great white spaces however, are still under research, discovery, adventure and experiment. Takreti says, “This combination of elements gives my work a spiritual dimension which reflects my state of mind during the creative process.” He had many exhibitions, with great frequency, in all the galleries in Damascus and also in Paris and Beirut. His latest solo exhibition “My Grandmother and I” was at Ayyam Damascus in 2009, depicting his childhood memories with his mother and grandmother. Today, his paintings are part of numerous public and private collections such as the Syrian National Museum and the Royal Foundation in Jordan." Ayyam Gallery

Ahmed Mater at the Louvre - reminder

8pm, Friday 11th December 2008

Illumination: Art, Science & Identity

An artists talk at the historic Louvre Auditorium ______________________

As part of Catherine David’s Gulf artists forum at the Louvre Museum in Paris, Saudi artist Dr Ahmed Mater will give a keynote talk about the unique context in which he works, and recent projects including X-Ray Illuminations, Magnetism, Evolution of Man and Yellow Cow Production. The landmark forum will explore the rapid urban growth, mixture of cultures and artistic practice developing in the Gulf.

Born in 1979, Ahmed Mater lives and works in Abha, capital of the mountainous Aseer region in southern Saudi Arabia, where he combines his career as an artist with that of a medical doctor at the local hospital. Mater may best be described as an illuminator of both form and ideas and a man of energy and few habits. It is from this knowledge of both loss and enlightenment that Mater appears to have the ability to move from expressing sadness and anger to sharing his insights with a sense of humor and lifegiving lightness.

In the work which has brought him fame in both Europe and the Middle East, he combined explicit notes from his medical education with a palimpsest of religious symbols and cultural references. While advertising science in his work Mater does not overestimate its meaning and serves his audience with the real question: is it just DNA that makes us human or is something more required? Mater is one of those artists who is not there for viewers alone but actually needs a listening audience. Compelled by a brave, conceptual imagination, Mater has developed a unique and powerful artistic voice, making him one of the most talked about artists in the Gulf; his work has been shown at the British Museum as well as at the Sharjah, Cairo and most recently at the 53rd Venice Biennale, where he co-curated the acclaimed Edge of Arabia and was presented at ADACH’s Platform for Visual Arts.
