A freelancer since 2005, Romenzi’s work has appeared in some of the world’s most renowned international publications. Similar to many of his colleagues, when the “spring” began to shake the Arab word, he headed east and began documenting the revolutions in Egypt and Libya. By February 2012, he felt driven to cover events in Syria and more specifically, to the “hot spots” of the time: Homs and al-Qusair.

Romenzi’s assessment of his Syrian experience speaks volumes of its significance—and its terror: “Contrary to what happened in Egypt and Libya, the Syrian uprising has the stench of an endless catastrophe… and that is what I wanted to document and publish. My job is to tell people, through my photographs, what’s happening. Yet in Syria, I didn’t feel that I was simply doing my job; I felt like I was fulfilling an ethical duty… I felt that I was taking pictures on behalf of the people rather than for those who might encounter them in different periodicals.”

شأن الكثيرين من زملائه، ما إن أخذ «الربيع» يدب في أوصال العالم العربي حتى يمم شرقاً فزار مصر وليبيا وساهم في توثيق ثورتيهما؛ وفي شباط من العام الحالي، 2012، وجد نفسه مقوداً إلى سوريا، وعلى وجه أخص إلى مهوى القتل والقتال حينذاك: حمص والقصير.

لا وَجْهَ شبه بين تجربة رومنزي في مصر وليبيا وتجربته السورية؛ فعلى ما يقول هو نفسه، وهو الأدرى بذلك: «بخلافِ مصرَ وليبيا، ما إنْ يصلَ المرءُ إلى سوريا حتى تمتلىء رئتاهُ برائحةِ موتٍ دفين، ويستبدُّ به الشعورُ بأن "الأعْظَمَ" لم يقعْ بعد... هذا ما وَجَدتني أوثّقه وأرويه. عملي كمصور أن أخبرَ الآخرين من خلال صوري بما يجري. ولكن في سوريا لم أشعر بأنني أقومُ بعملي فقط... في سوريا تَمَلّكني الشعورُ بأنني أؤدّي واجباً أخلاقياً... بأنني أصوّر، أولاً، على نيّة الناس الذين أصوّرهم وليس على نيّة أولئك الذين يُطالعون الصحف التي قد يعنيها أن تنشر صوري».
