Athr Gallery is proud to announce its participation in Art Berlin Contemporary with a selection of work from Ayman Yossri Daydban’s series ‘Subtitles’. The basic function of Arabic subtitles in a foreign film is translation. The subtitle works within the context of the film as a narration to the story as well as an explanation of the action that accompanies it. As such, the impact of the picture precedes that of the subtitle and creates the framework for it.
When removed from the context of the film, and re-exported with the image of the film still, the function of the subtitle is transformed from confirming meaning to actually producing it. It is re-born as a unique source of content, with no past or alternative function. ‘Subtitles’ at abc address the theme of political power, a subject that is now more than ever relevant to the Middle East region that for the past two years has been undergoing the revolutionary turmoil of the Arab Spring. Throughout history, all periods of profound upheaval have precipitated profound change. Daydban raises crucial questions regarding the nature of these changes and the future of the Middle East; what is freedom and what is its price? What is the price of peace and can it prevail without violence? Who is your friend and who is your enemy? Is democracy an illusion? Through a meticulously selected collection of subtitled film stills, the artist aims to put into perspective the major issues relating to the violent transformation of a historically complex geographical region and the permanence of the intrinsic inability to trust the forces of change, their allegiances or their power to create a better future.
abc art berlin contemporary will take place from September 13th–16th at Station Berlin and is a partner in the newly founded Berlin Art Week. While in past years the selection of artworks was based on an overarching theme, this year galleries have been asked to submit their own positions. abc’s innovative fair format was developed by Berlin galleries with international galleries in mind, encouraging them to present individual positions in contemporary art from around the world. New York’s Artists Space has been invited to curate two interventions as well as organizing a bazaar with around 20 international creatives. The exhibition design for this year‘s abc was developed by Manuel Raeder and is looking critically into temporary fair architecture.
129 galleries from 18 countries will participate: 66 galleries from Berlin, 8 from Vienna, 6 from London, 4 each from Dubai, New York, Zurich and Paris, 2 each from Beijing, Brussels, Cape Town, Frankfurt, Malmö, Milan, Munich and Rome; and 1 each from Antwerp, Bremen, Catania, Copenhagen, Dresden, Dusseldorf, Glasgow, Hamburg, Helsinki, Hong Kong, Innsbruck, Istanbul, Jeddah, Karlsruhe, Cologne, Naples, Prague and Seoul. abc is a private initiative by nine galleries in Berlin: Galerie Guido W. Baudach, Mehdi Chouakri, Galerie Kamm, Klosterfelde, Meyer Riegger, Galerie Neu, Neugerriemschneider, Esther Schipper and Zak Branicka.
