Arwa Alaseeri, Never Never Land, Video, 2014
|
Curated by Amal Khalaf and Stephen Stapleton, Never Never Land touches upon the humour and sarcasm in art through anecdotes from Arab society.
In countries where public protest is forbidden and political activism is sharply curtailed and overt social critique is often frowned upon by the authorities, the rebellion inherent in humor is particularly valuable and powerful.

Where censorship is widespread, satire, parody, and humor are often the best or only means available to air opinions, voice dissent, or challenge societal norms and taboos. Astonishingly effective, mockery can destroy mystique, break tensions, and disarm seemingly omnipotent, oppressive powers more effectively than any serious, overtly political challenge. At a time when memes, cartoons and graffiti critical of contemporary politics carry enough power even to elicit death threats and imprisonment, an image, video or artwork can sum up the follies of an era with a lightning-quick precision unavailable to even the most talented writer or charismatic speaker. This exhibition is a response to an outburst of creative dissent produced by artists today.
