THE ARMORY SHOW HAS ARRIVED | Special Report by @JamineBager for @OasisMag

Wooden Dolls by Carlo Massoud (Maya, Zeina, Racha and Yara) On Exhibition at The Armory Show with Carawan Gallery

New York City woke up to a harsh winter storm but it will take more than a swarm of snow flurries to keep artsy New Yorkers and art lovers away. The Armory Show—one of the art world’s most prestigious events—opens this afternoon, overlooking Manhattan’s Hudson River. This year, the (indoor) show will feature Armory Focus: Middle East, North Africa and the Mediterranean (MENAM), curated by the art world’s superstar curator of the Whitechapel Gallery in London, Omar Kholeif, who splits his time between London, NYC and the Middle East.

“I started working with the art and artists of the so-called Middle Eastern world because of a personal struggle. Historically, artists have travelled between and across these sites, from Egypt to Turkey, from Lebanon to Cyprus, Morocco to Palestine, and back and forth again in abundant and nonlinear ways. The aim is mapping this terrain, to insinuate a potted reading of artwork that seeks to challenge notions of tradition, territory and geography,” Kholeif said.

Also, the lead cultural partner this year is Edge of Arabia and the education partner is none other than the Art Jameel. Arthr Gallery, Jeddah, is also representing Saudi Arabia, in addition to Ahmed Mater, Husam Al-Sayed from Telfaz 11 and many others. Armory Arts Week also kicks off today, a citywide program of cultural events happening in different venues scattered across all five boroughs of New York.

In addition to hosting 199 premiere galleries from 28 countries, the indoor space of the “Mothership” at the main Armory, will provide something for every taste.

Quick Facts:
Pier 92 will be dedicated to modern art (from the 20th century)
Pier 94 will be dedicated to contemporary art (living artists, including many from MENAM)
