On February 18th, a group of eight Saudi men and women started their journey to Africa's highest mountain, Kilimanjaro (the highest free standing mountain in the world - at 5,895 meters). The group is currently climbing Kilimajaro and you can follow their journey on Twitter.
Kilimanjaro for Cancer's aim is to raise funds to help the Saudi Cancer Foundation (SCF) establish the 1st Early Detection Center in the Eastern Province of Saudi Arabia. "This center will cover most common types of cancer in the region for both males & females. According to WHO mortality estimates, cancer is the fourth ranked cause of death in the Eastern Mediterranean Region, after cardiovascular diseases, infectious diseases and injuries. It is estimated that cancer kills 272,000 people each year in the Region. In addition, the largest increase in cancer incidence among the WHO regions in the next 15 years is likely to be in the Eastern Mediterranean Region" says the group on their official Facebook page.
The group of 8 climbing Kilimanjaro are: Noor Ashadawi, Budoor Ashadawi, Khadija Al-Jefri, Ariel Al-Blehed, Ahmed Al-Rabiah, Abdullah Al-Mulhim, Hamza Marzouki, and Mona Shahab .
"Inspired by desire to see change in the world we decided that if we were to climb a mountain it would be for a cause, turning the physical challenge of climbing a mountain into a metaphor for overcoming the obstacles of disease", said climber Mona Shahab. She continues "we will travel to Tanzania at our own expense, for a cause that hits too close to home for many of us. We’ve all heard of or known someone who has lost his/her life to cancer, and unanimously feel that there is room for us to help."

سيقوم مجموعة من الشباب برحلة إلى تنزانيا للتسلق والوصول إلى قمة جبل كليمنجارو وهي أعلى قمة في أفريقيا وأكثرها شهرة عالميا حيث يبلغ ارتفاعها 5,895 متراً عن سطح البحر. ويعتبر جبل كليمنجارو أقرب نقطة تغطيها الثلوج قريبة من خط الاستواء وهو أحد المواقع السياحية الهامة في تنزانيا
الهدف من رحلة التسلق هو جمع التبرعات لجمعية السرطان السعودية في المنطقة الشرقية لدعم بناء أول مركز للكشف المبكر عن السرطان في المملكة العربية السعودية حيث سيقوم المركز بتشخيص الأورام السرطانية الأكثر شيوعا عند النساء والرجال في المملكة. وفقا لمنظمة الصحة العالمية فإن رابع سبب وفيات في منطقة الشرق الأوسط هو مرض السرطان حيث يقتل سنويا ما يقارب ٢٧٢٠٠٠ شخص. هذا ومن المتوقع أن تشهد منطقة الشرق الأوسط أعلى نسبة ازدياد في السرطان في ال ١٥ سنة المقبلة. والموارد اللازمة لمكافحة السرطان في المنطقة ككل ليست غير كافية فحسب بل موجهة بشكل حصري للعلاج فقط.وبما أن الكشف المبكر عن السرطان يزيد من نسبة العلاج فقد أصبحت هناك ضرورة ملحة لإيجاد مراكز متخصصة في هذا المجال.فلنجعل جمع التبرعات لدعم بناء أول مركز للكشف المبكر عن السرطان في المنطقة الشرقية رسالتنا في الحياة و الميراث الذي سنبقيه للأجيال القادمة. ملاحظة: جميع المتسلقين سيمولون رحلتهم من حسابهم الخاص وجميع التبرعات ستذهب مباشرة إلى حساب إنشاء مركز الكشف المبكر عن السرطان.يمكن إرسال دعمكم إلى الحساب الخاص لجمعية السرطان السعودية مع ذكر أن المبلغ مخصص للرحلة كليمنجارو بنك الأهلي التجاري- فرع الخبر الرئيسي
