Ballet at the Abu Dhabi Festival > A Middle East Premiere! La Bayadère by Semperoper Ballet (Abu Dhabi)

(Abu Dhabi, UAE: 31 March 2012): The Abu Dhabi Festival once again plays host to a Middle East premier. La Bayadere, a ballet from Semperoper, one of the world’s youngest and most dynamic ballet companies, laid siege to the limits of artistry and musical expression in their captivating performance at the Emirates palace last night. La Bayadère is a dramatic ballet of eternal love, mystery, fate, vengeance and justice intertwined to tell the story of Nikiya, a Temple Dancer, her lover Solor, and the vengeance that keeps them apart, at least in this life. The production danced their way into the hearts of the Abu Dhabi audience with their beautiful portrayal of eternal love.

Her Excellency Mrs Hoda Al Khamis Kanoo, Founder and Artistic Director of the Abu Dhabi Festival described the show as “a breath-taking performance of a powerful and intriguing story.  This was a fantastic opportunity for an audience in the Middle East to see for themselves why Semperoper are one of the most talked-about ballet companies in the world right now”.

From one of the most beautiful opera houses in the world, La Bayadère is a milestone of classical ballet. Set in ancient India and originally choreographed by Marius Petipa, this typically romantic story tells of the doomed love between Nikiya, a Temple Dancer, (also known as a Bayadère), and Solar - a princely warrior. As the drama unfolds, the ballet features the most spectacular set pieces, including the mesmeric Kingdom of the Shades, which has been called one of the choreographic glories of the world. A ballet of the grandest scale, featuring elephants, tigers, cobras, fakirs and spectacular oriental costumes, La Bayadère tells a magnificent tale of jealousy, murder and above all, love. Accompanying the Semperoper Ballet from Dresden is the NDR Radiophilharmonie Hanover, widely regarded as one of the most versatile orchestras in Germany.
