JAMM, an independent art advisory, will host its second exhibition in Dubai featuring the artworks of award-winning, Swiss architect, artist and jewelry designer, André C. Meyerhans commencing on Wednesday, 2nd May at Toby Arts, a new art gallery space located in Al-Quoz, Dubai.

André C. Meyerhans’ creations range from 250’000m2 urban plans and one- billion-US-dollar mixed-use developments to furniture-like objects, art and jewelry. André evolves his designs along academic studies that portray a synthesis between objects, art and architecture.

“My artwork represents a part of a larger research to develop a contemporary design language for the Middle Eastern region. The approach focuses on analyzing geometric elements and their underlying principles. By combining historic and contemporary attributes, a locally rooted, new design language emerges.” said André C. Meyerhans.

The series of architecture, art installations, design and jewelry showcased at the exhibition blur the boundaries between the trades. André interprets traditional patterns and plays with the logic of them rather than with their pure geometry only. This allows him to create a radical, contemporary style that can be applied to any design process in art, architecture and jewelry creation. André’s designs are powerful and personal with the capability to develop their own characters.

One of the highlights at the exhibition will be the Masharabia Cube, a highly geometrical structure with a dynamic, aperiodical and perpetual pattern. The arrangement follows the principle of Kufi, which resembles an early style of Islamic calligraphy. The Masharabia Cube is also a light art with a compelling shadow image. The magenta color on the internal surface represents the national color of the young UAE: fresh, extroverted and joyful.

The jewelry lines presented at the exhibition explore the richness of orthogonal patterns: some of the creations embrace random arrangements others assemble elements to a larger formation. The geometric pieces evoke associations with cubism and traditional patterns yet clearly distinguish themselves from any of these references.

“We are very excited to showcase the works of André C. Meyerhans. His innovative and contemporary designs blend Western design principles with Eastern-inspired patterns. From limited-edition, contemporary furniture to works of art and jewelry, his translation of the East/West concept takes design to a whole new level," said HH Sheikha Lulu M Al Sabah, Partner and Founder of JAMM.

André has designed many award winning projects across the globe; among them is the New Garhoud Bridge in Dubai which won the prestigious MEED award in 2010. Upon completion, the Al Nadi Tower in Abu Dhabi, a lighthouse cum viewing tower will be yet another of Andre’s architectural genius creations.

The Andre Meyerhans exhibition will run from 2-15 May 2012 at Toby Arts- Block 1, Warehouse 11, Al-Quoz, close to Al Serkal Avenue.

Timings: Sunday-Thursday from 12.00 - 7.00 pm.
