Where do we go from here? Women in Contemporary Arab Art @viatraffic > May 24

Bouchra Khalili, The Mapping Journey Project (2008-2011)

Panelists will consider the representation of Arab women in contemporary art practices within local, regional and diaspora contexts. The representation of women in Arab contemporary art, the accomplishments by Arab women artists who make art reflecting women's experiences, and improving the status of women will also be highlighted. Artists Sama Alshaibi and Maisoon Al Saleh will bring their first-hand experiences and reflections on their own respective art practices, while Arab art historian and curator Dr. Salwa Mikdadi offers a broad perspective on Arab women artists and the representation of women in contemporary Arab art. This panel is supported by the U.S. Embassy to the UAE as part of its cultural diplomacy initiatives, which include Sama Alshaibi's current public speaking tour of the UAE, and is moderated by Isabella Ellaheh Hughes—an independent curator and Dubai Editor of ArtAsiaPacific.
