In
this body of work, ceramist May Abboud explores the use of textures on
her sculptures. Be it vessels or masks, these surfaces are inspired from
nature as well as from the rich cultural heritage inherited, such as
embroidered dresses, copperware and traditional Bedouin jewelry all
exhibiting a rich exterior quality. Using a variety of fabrics, from
netting to lace or other textured objects, she imprints onto the clay,
and at times enhances the surface with a subtle color.
Born in Haifa, Palestine, May Abboud holds a Ph.D.
in Mathematics from the University of Massachusetts, and a Master’s
degree in Computer Science from the George Washington University in
Washington D.C.. Slowly along her career, she shifts into art, and
attends numerous workshops on ceramics and paintings, and takes part in
Artist Residencies. Since then she participates in several group shows
in Lebanon and France. In 2009 she is awarded the “Prix du Musée
Sursock” at the XXIXth “Salon d’Automne” and in 2012 the “Mention
Spéciale du Jury” at Sursock Museum’s XXXIst “Salon d’Automne”.
