“It must be my schizophrenic personality … that’s probably why I do ten thousand different things at the same time”, explained Marriam Mossalli when asked why she wasn’t just happy working on one venture at a time. You see Mossali is not only an entrepreneur; she’s also a writer, the Editor-at-Large of Marie Claire Arabia Magazine, a luxury consultant and an online persona all wrapped into one.
As a writer, Mossalli’s no-holds-barred, honest and witty style has earned her a loyal following and the respect of her peers; she was awarded “Best Critic” in 2011.
Although Mossalli’s heart and love remains with the written word, her love for fashion, her love of shopping, her sense of practicality and a shrewd business-mind found her establishing Niche, a luxury consultancy firm that has acquired a unique insight in both the Gulf and Western markets.
“I had been giving designers and fashion stores advice for years… I guess I saw an opportunity whilst speaking to Kara Ross, the accessory designer. She expressed concern over having the right insight into the Saudi market. I had the insight, so I decided to get smart and get paid for my strong foothold in the region.” Within a few months of launching Niche, Mossalli had already signed on fashion giants such as Burberry and Harvey Nichols to name a few.
Mossalli’s company itself is a romantic homage to her home country of Saudi Arabia, “I was born in Sri Lanka and moved around almost every three months. It is weird but as a global nomad I still remember when I was in the United States and took the decision to move back to Saudi Arabia. I felt I needed to be back home. I was born on the Saudi national day and sometimes I feel like I need to overcompensate. I’m back home and I need to make it a better place. I feel the spotlight is on us and we need to show the world what we are capable of.”
Wrapping up our phone conversation before Mossalli headed out to her New Year’s camping trip to Madain Saleh, a pre-Islamic archaeological site located in the Al-Ula sector in Saudi Arabia, she discussed the future. “ 2013 is the year of Marriam Mossalli. I’m excited to build up my Niche team and most importantly I’m excited to build a legacy.”
