The Ara Gallery is presenting an Arabic Calligraphy Workshop with Wissam Shawcat, in collaboration with the Dubai Calligraphy Center.
Delivered in eight sessions at The Pavilion Downtown Dubai, this
workshop will be a combination of theoretical presentations and
practical experience, providing an introduction to Arabic calligraphy,
and the rules and structure of some of the main Arabic calligraphic
styles.
The workshop will begin with an illustrated lecture on the history of
Arabic calligraphy, giving an understanding of the historical context
and the development of calligraphy leading to contemporary styles. The
tools and materials used in the art of Arabic calligraphy will be
discussed, including a demonstration of the making of a calligraphy reed
pen.
An overview of the main and the most used styles of calligraphy will
be presented, clarifying the characteristics of each style and
showcasing examples of calligraphy fine art pieces, demonstrating the
application of both traditional and modern approaches. Emphasis will be
placed on showing the use of Arabic calligraphy as a modern art form.
A specific calligraphic style will be selected as a basis for the
studio practice. The workshop leader will work with the participants to
develop their individual skills using this selected style.
