On the occasion of the opening of ‘Generation’, a joint exhibition by Italian architect and designer Piero Alessandrini and Arnaud Riveren in La Galerie Nationale (AlSerkal, Dubai), Design Days Dubai will hold the first of its new monthly series of talks titled “Design Stories”.
Design Days Dubai is the only fair dedicated to modern and contemporary collectible and limited edition furniture and design objects in the Middle East and South Asia. The fair has ushered in a new chapter in the arts and cultural scene in Dubai hosting 22 leading galleries from 14 different countries and a series of public workshops and talks. Design Days Dubai was also a popular and commercial success with over 8,500 visitors, promising sales and special commissions by major Dubai-based companies.
“Following the successful launch of Design Days Dubai last March, we wanted to carry forward access to the design world by inviting conversation, encouraging discussion and stimulating debate.” says Cyril Zammit, Fair Director Design Days Dubai. ‘Design Stories’ will be focussing on the history behind key aesthetic movements, the market of design and the design trends. ‘Design Stories’ will involve local and international exhibitors and speakers from the 2013 edition of Design Days Dubai.”
This first discussion will be led by Piero Alessandrini, joined by Guillaume Cuiry, Director of La Galerie Nationale and Chiara Alessandrini. Design and art writer Sandra Lane will chair the session about Alessandrini’s work and his philosophy, with specific reference to the items on show within the ‘Generation’ exhibition.
About Piero Alessandrini
Piero Alessandrini began his career as an architect, and the influence of that discipline clearly informs his designs today. He graduated from the University of Rome's architecture school in Valle Giulia, having studied under Pier Luigi Nervi, and carved out a successful career, working on the design of a number of prestigious private homes including Villa Spalletti Trivelli, the Angelli’s home in Forte deo Marmi and the villa for the Sultan of Brunei.
Important public projects include the Italian Embassy in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia, and the "Scuola Superiore dell'amministrazione dell'Interno" (Interior Ministry Academy) in Rome.
Since 2007, Piero Alessandrini has worked on innovative designs for small dwellings and common spaces for residential projects. His new collection of furniture focuses on methacrylate, a material that sits beautifully with any architectural style. The material can be moulded into the most diverse shapes, while its transparency gives a lightness of touch that allows the idea inspiring each table, chair or bookcase to shine through.
