Outstanding Syrian artist Houmam's exquisite works have recently come on the world stage at Sothebys in Doha and at a successful sale at Christies in Dubai. Houman takes the human figure to a new level of expression with his playful and childish representations of everyday people set in a specific time and space. The faces are distinctive in their formative build with strong and flexible characters, which are grounded in his sculptural background.
Houmam who has recently moved to Beirut from Damascus is a multi-disciplinary artist working in several media however his beautiful sketches are often the inspiration behind his painting's and sculpture. The exhibition ' From Damascus to Beirut' is the result of memories recreated such as a road in the old neighborhood or himself with his family, drawn from a memory of them walking down the street. The exhibition has several reoccurring themes, sketches from the recent uprising- families fleeing or men cowering in the street. Giant ants climb around over his figures, human hands grow in pot plants. And his signature 'HATS', Houmam explains 'In the past the hat was around the whole area of the brain...the characters could see but they couldn't think. Now you can see on eye visible the other eye covered. The characters only see things from one side-one opinion, one perspective. 'From Damascus to Beirut' will be view at Mark Hachem Gallery until December 13, 2012.'
From Damascus to Beirut' will exhibit first at at Mark Hachem Gallery- Beirut and will be on view until December 13, The exhibition is then scheduled to go on tour to be exhibited in Paris in early 2013 and finally taking the show to New York.
